I ola ʻoe, i ola iaʻu nei.
Translation: when you live, I live.
This Hawaiian phrase shares a lens through which anyone/everyone can look at themselves and the world we belong to.
While watching a recent video, the woman narrating explained that she says these words each time she plants a new tree in her homeland of Hawaii. Her voice alone conveyed the beauty of the words, and once I learned their meaning, I couldn't stop thinking about them.
It's easy to feel as if I stand alone. But I am intrinsically connected to all life on this planet. The health of the oceans is my health. The health of the forests is my health. The health of the animals is my health. The health of not only my family and loved ones, but also those people far and wide that I likely will never know or have anything in common with is my health.
I ola ʻoe, i ola mākou nei. When you live, we live.
Beautiful.
