I met Sue by chance yesterday, in an online Substack workshop, and today am poking around in her past posts. You are an excellent writer, Sue. I fully enjoyed all ten parts of your family reunion travelogue. Onward!
Sue, this was beautiful!!! I felt every word, from the homeless man to why on earth the homesteaders "steaded." I felt like I was on this train with you and aside from the shouting, cursing, and vomiting, it sounds like such a sublime experience. No travel would be complete without some sort of weirdness, right? 😊
'Writing this series has been a remarkable experience.'
Well, Sue, reading it has been a remarkable one for me. Absolutely gorgeous - so poignant, loving, funny, nostalgic, awkward (I'm thinking in particular about this train journey you've described) - all of it.
Oh the juxtaposition of the beauty outside the window, the week filled with love and longing and a microcosm (the argument) of the happenings in the world.
BTW, I don't remember winning all of the games after that first one. Just ssayin'
Haha, you have a generous memory ♟️🎲🎰
Call 911 from a moving train? I am more and more convinced that our so-called "wonderful brains" are jokesters.
Right? We were chuckling as well.
