So happy to hear the evacuation warning has been lifted and that you are safe. I agree, that smell of rain is intoxicating. I woke this morning to the sound of more rain pounding the roof. This long drought has taught many of us to appreciate that sound and smell even more.

Here in the desert, rain is front page news. It is the lead story on the evening news beating out the Queen on down. I highligihited the phrase about things in life being on loan. Great choice of words. I am relieved you have the all clear for your home. A good night's sleep is one of the joys in life.

I’m so glad you are safe. I love this :” that blessed state of denial— denying the fact that all of the people we love and the possessions we treasure are only on loan.”

Indeed.

In old age, our acts of denial get smaller and further apart. When my husband falls into a deep sleep, I can't hear his breathing. So I wake, thinking of that day, getting closer, when one of us will not wake up. When he goes on a walk in the woods with the dog, I listen and wait. Every year, we wait for the fire season and my ears are tuned to catch the sounds of helicopters, big planes, sirens. And every morning, at 4 when I have my private time and can write, and write, and write till 7, I open the window by my desk so I can hear the sounds of the life around me. I am so grateful. Even though sometimes I ask myself, "Why?" in truth, it's good to have some unanswerable questions - just, please, not too many of them!
