Good morning, and happy new year. I was planning to write about what change means to me, how fortunate I am for the opportunity each day to create something new and the fact that we don’t need to wait for a new year to prompt change. I often reference Kenny Loggins’ song “One Chance at a Time.” The song points out that every day is a second chance to do better, make adjustments, forgive, make a difference, and help someone on their path.
Coincidentally, this morning I opened a post from Cai Emmons, a very talented writer I’ve been following, who, after a much shorter battle than she anticipated with ALS, will be ending her life today, January 2nd, 2023. You can learn more about Cai here. Cai has been making a difference for quite some time. In her farewell email, she writes,
I can also see from my perch on the cusp of death that no amount of worldly success matters in the end. It is such a cliché thing to say so, but the thing that means the most now is human connection, friendship, and love in all its manifestations.
Thank you, Cai, for that reminder as I move into 2023. And thank you, Kenny, for helping me remember that I’ve got
endless second chances to take it one chance at a time.
Here’s to 2023- no resolutions, just the desire to
appreciate my health in whatever form it takes
use my energy wisely
love those around me
and do my best to make a positive difference.
As Sue knows, I was widowed at age 41. My husband Ron died of cancer at age 46. One of the last things he said to me before h died was he realized that the only thing that mattered in life was who you love and who loved you back. It is a gift I take with me everyday.
Thank you for this, Sue. Such a sober reminder of the truly important things in life--PEOPLE!
