I love this photo with the wind blowing every which direction while I work to maintain my balance.
While every day can be a new beginning, as a community, we seem to focus on the new year as a reminder that we are capable of change. My Substack friend
wrote last week about her practice of selecting a word to concentrate on in the new year rather than making new year's resolutions. It didn't take long for me to hear myself say "balance." A few other ideas fought for my attention, each one a valid contender. But balance, in one word, managed to encompass the whole of what I'd like to concentrate on this year.
When I looked up the definition of balance, both the verb and noun meanings warmed my heart.
an even distribution of weight enabling someone or something to remain upright and steady.
a condition in which different elements are equal or in the correct proportions.
keep or put (something) in a steady position so that it does not fall.
offset or compare the value of (one thing) with another.
Balance has always been important to me as a yogi. But nailing tree pose doesn't equate to balancing the many aspects of my life.
I especially love the last definition, "offset or compare the value of (one thing) with another," because it's all too easy for me to skip this step, resulting in too many activities on my calendar.
So, balance it is for 2025. I’d love to hear your ideas.
I love your post and the picture!
Every year I select a word for the year, and I create a vision board. One year I selected Reinvent. I wanted to move to California to be by our children and grandchildren. Within 3 months I was offered a job, and we moved. In 2020, I selected Trust. It became the word that helped me through my husband being in the hospital and then COVID.
I suggest to my yoga classes and groups this practice every year.
Love the image of you being in balance Sue. It’s a great word as it has so many connotations from the micro to the macro. 💓
