The first time I ever saw a field of sunflowers was in Brittany, north-west France, when I was twelve. It was breathtaking. They're called 'tournesol' over there - 'turn to the sun' - and until then I'd had no idea that their faces follow the sun from one side of the horizon to the other. Such a great metaphor.
