"If at first you don't succeed try, try and try again." —Robert the Bruce, king of Scotland
As I sit in my favorite chair with a slight breeze coming through the sliding doors, I marvel this Monday morning about Mother Nature and the lessons we can take from her. As a landscaper, I’ve learned this lesson many times, but I’m always excited to revisit it.Â
Just outside our sliding doors and down the stairs to the right sits a small lemon tree bearing fruit for the first time. The lemons are still small and bright green, quite beautiful.Â
We have moved this lemon tree three times over nine years, but it has never flourished. Finally, a few years back, we found a location where it can thrive.Â
How different are we from this small lemon tree? Placed in an environment that genuinely supports and nurtures us, there’s no limit to the fruit we can bear. The key is perseverance and being open to change.

I have three lemon trees I started from seeds from an organic lemon about 3 years ago. (I originally started with 5, but two didn’t do so well.). They are not quite as full as yours—yet. Each summer I put them outside along with the rest of my houseplants. This summer has been terrible for plants because of certain bugs. I saw a flying butterfly laying her eggs on the leaves and then noticed some lacing happening to certain leaves. OH NO! I plucked off all eggs I could find, and discarded the leaves with the tiny caterpillars on them and brought them inside and continued to check them for a week after. They are still inside but back at their winter sunny windows. No lemons yet. But I have faith they will some day. What kind of fertilizer do you use?
How very true.
